Storing
Wine
Proper storage of wine is very important to the development
and preservation of good wine.
Below
are a few guidelines to keep in mind.
-
Store your wine in an area that is free from sunlight;
as it can destroy flavor and the life of wine.-The
ideal temperature is between 55-60 degrees. Gradual
fluctuations are acceptable, however consistency
is important. -Avoid storing wine in the refrigerator
for more than 5 days. The refrigerator motor creates
vibrations which are harmful to wine, in addition
cold temperatures tend to flatten and numb a wine's
flavor and taste
-
If you do not want to invest in a wine cellar or
elaborate equipment for storage a cool closet will
do nice for awhile. Think about where your closet
sits in your house. Does the sun beat down on the
back wall, thus warming the closet beyond 75 degrees?
If so, choose another closet.
-
The area should be moist or humid. About 75% humidity
and 90% maximum. Mold will grow with 95% humidity
or higher and spoil your wine.-Bottles with corks
should be stored lying on their side. This keeps
the cork moist and keeps the seal intact which keeps
oxygen out and thus not allowing the wine to spoil.-Bottles
with plastic or metal caps (Beverage Wine) should
be stored upright so that the wine does not come
in contact with the metal. Metal can give your wine
a tinny or metal taste.
-
It's a good idea to choose an area with low vibrations.
For example, avoid areas near a dryer, washer or
refrigerator .
